Belgium: The Easiest Route to a EU Passport?

pI had an interesting conversation over the weekend with a well-connected attorney I know in Europe.  He reminded me that Belgium imposes no capital gains tax, and as a result is attracting an increasing number of wealthy tax exiles.  And not only is it relatively easy to qualify for residence there, after three years you qualify for Belgian citizenship and passport.  That gives you the right to live and work in any of the other 26 EU countries.  You can also keep your current passport.  /ppThe biggest drawback is that you have to learn French, although no one expects you to speak it perfectly.  You also have to show some degree of integration in Belgium.  But if you learn some French, rent an apartment, and appear to be settling down in Belgium, you’ll probably qualify for a Belgian passport.  Especially if you’re willing to live there most of the time, Belgian residence might be worth considering.
